Tree Spade

Tree Spade Service in Halstead, Newton and Wichita, KS

Shady Waters offers tree spade service. We can help you choose from our large selection of trees from local tree farms, and we can move trees you already have.

Most landscaping starts small and waits. A tree spade skips the waiting. Rather than planting a sapling and hoping to enjoy it in fifteen years, we lift a mature tree with its root ball intact and set it in your yard in a single day. It is a service few landscapers in central Kansas offer, because it takes the truck to do it.

What a Tree Spade Actually Does

Ours is a 90-inch truck-mounted spade. Hydraulic blades close around the trunk and cut a cone-shaped root ball out of the ground, the tree lifts out in one piece, and the same blades open again to set it into a hole cut to exactly the same shape. Because the roots stay packed in their own soil, the tree barely registers the move.

Buying and Planting a Mature Tree

We will help you choose from a large selection at local tree farms, then dig, haul, and plant it for you. This is how you put a real shade tree beside a new house instead of a stick in a ring of mulch, which is why new builds are a good part of what we do. It pairs naturally with the rest of your planting plan.

Moving a Tree You Already Have

Sometimes a tree is simply in the wrong place: too close to the house, in the path of a new patio, or shading something it should not. If it is a size our spade can handle, we can move it instead of taking it down. We also harvest trees from treelines and wooded ground where thinning is welcome.

The Right Time of Year to Move a Tree

Most of our spade work happens while trees are dormant, from late fall through early spring, before bud break. A dormant tree is not pushing new growth, so it handles the move with much less stress. If you are planning for spring, it is worth calling us in winter.

What Happens on the Day

We call for utility locates before anything goes in the ground, then dig the receiving hole first so the tree spends as little time out of the soil as possible. We set it, backfill, and water it in. Then we will talk you through watering afterwards, because that is what decides whether a transplanted tree takes.
